In March 2020, as the Coronavirus Pandemic spread around the world, the UK came under tighter and tighter controls. By Monday the 16th of March people here were advised not to visit Theatres, and as a consequence all West End Theatres shut down that evening. By Friday the 20th of March all Theatres around the Country were officially ordered to close.

Restrictions on people's movements, and the closing down of most other businesses, soon meant that the usually busy streets of London were almost deserted. On Monday the 23rd of March, the day before all but essential travel was banned, I walked the deserted streets of London to photograph the West End's major Theatres under 'lock down' and to document the shows that had been playing in them before they were all forced to close.

The following photographs show all of London's major West End Theatres on a beautifully sunny afternoon on the 23rd of March 2020, and some of the deserted streets they stand in. Most of these Theatres have already survived two World Wars, so despite the closures, unprecedented since World War Two, when the worst is over, as the sign said on the Old Vic that day 'We'll Be Back'.

To the many thousands of people normally involved in Theatre in London's West End, as I am myself, and the hundreds of other Theatres around the Country, who are currently out of work due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, I wish you all the best of health and hope that you will all be able to return to your Theatres and begin to entertain the British Public again as soon as possible, God knows people are going to need entertaining after weeks and months of isolation, quarantining, worry, and boredom. M.L. March 24th 2020.
