Since 1984 only 25% of the building has been used and it is hoped that the rest of the building will soon be restored and reopened. In 2008 Liverpool Celebrated its status as the European Capital of Culture and the opening ceremony, was staged in front and on top of St George's Hall on the 11th of January, with over 600 performers including Former Eurythmics frontman Dave Stewart, The Wombats, and a roof top performance by former Beatle Ringo Starr.
