A Chronological List of Productions at the Theatre Royal, Bath 1900-1938
Compiled by Christine M. Bayliss 2019
Introduction - 1900 - 1901 - 1902 - 1903 - 1904 - 1905 - 1906 - 1907 - 1908 - 1909 - 1910 - 1911 - 1912 - 1913 - 1914 - 1915 - 1916 - 1917 - 1918 - 1919 - 1920 - 1921 - 1922 - 1923 - 1924 - 1925 - 1926 - 1927 - 1928 - 1929 - 1930 - 1931 - 1932 - 1933 - 1934 - 1935 - 1936 - 1937 - 1938
See Also: Theatre Royal, Bath Productions from 1805 to 1862 - 1863 to 1899 - 1900 to 1938 - 1939 to 1981 - 1982 to 2019
This list for productions at the Theatre Royal, Bath from 1900 to 1938 has mostly been compiled from advertisements and reviews in The Bath Chronicle, Keene's Bath Journal and the Bath & Wilts Chronicle and Herald held at Bath Central Library. Some of the newspaper runs are incomplete and there were periods when the theatre did not advertise at all. Generally this seems to have been in the summer 'vacation' which ran from about May to the August Bank Holiday then at the beginning of the month rather than end. Additionally, prior to Easter Sunday the theatre often closed for the week but sometimes just for Good Friday. At other times a new play would open on Easter Saturday and continue right though the following week. Most productions, though, tended to start on Easter Monday. Information given in square brackets [ ] indicates a statement believed to be accurate but unproven at time of compilation.
A feature of this period seems to have been regular visits from touring theatrical and opera companies, as well as lengthy seasons of various resident companies. The former, especially the opera companies, tended to have a repertoire that must have been very tiring with up to eight different productions each week including two matinees.
Frequently the repertoire for visiting companies was not given in advertisements and it is often only the last 3 performances that receive a mention either in the advertisement, preview or review. To confuse things further, matinees were sometimes referred to as morning performances - a literal translation of the word. There were also a number of 'flying matinees' usually around 3pm when a visiting company came in for just part of the day. This included visits from artistes such as Mrs. Patrick Campbell, Dame Clara Butt and Sarah Bernhardt. Many plays were preceded by a curtain raiser but these, in general, were not advertised. Luckily, there was usually a reference to them in the review of the principal attraction of the evening. Benefit performances were frequently given, mainly by local amateurs, in aid of good causes, local, national and international, which included the Royal United Hospital, The Titanic Fund, the Italian Earthquake Fund of 1909, War Charities and the Norton Hill Colliery Disaster Fund.
