Theatres and Halls in South Shields

There were two Theatres built next to each other in South Shields. The first to be built was the Theatre Royal and the second was the Empire Palace. Both Theatres now exist only in their frontage and have been gutted internally and converted into shops. (See Photo Right.)

The Theatre Royal was built in 1866 and ceased as an entertainment venue in 1934.

The Empire Palace was built in 1897 on the site of a former theatre called Thorntons Theatre of Varieties, which Arthur Lloyd is known to have performed in, Thornton's Theatre of Varieties was itself built in 1892.
