The Curve Theatre was designed by the Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly and opened on the 11th of November 2008 with an inaugural show called 'Lift Off.' Construction of the Theatre began in 2005 and it was built at a cost of £61m, more than twice its originally projected cost. The Theatre was officially opened by the Queen in December 2008 for the production of 'Simply Cinderella'. The BBC covered the opening of the Theatre and their news item can still be seen here. They also featured the Curve on Newsnight and a video of this can still be seen here.

This unusual building has lifting steel walls which separate the stage from the foyer areas and when opened reveal the stage to the FOH areas.

One of the features of the Curve is that people can see the Theatre working from the street. The foyer passes right around both auditoriums. You can walk right around the two Theatres inside the foyer.

The main auditorium and the studio Theatre both share the same large stage, which has acoustic curtains which can be lowered to cut out the sound from one auditorium to the other. Each auditorium faces each other with the stage between each. The wall of the main auditorium can be raised up so that the whole of the stage set can be viewed from the foyer and outside in the street.
