The "Fourteenth" Souvenir

Mrs. Laura Henderson

What a proud record, and incidentally, a World record for an absolutely British Institution! The picture of the woman who is responsible for this amazing feat should remain in your memory for long as, although she is now getting on for four score years, her courage, tenacity and vim never lessens for one moment.

Since the last Souvenir was issued, it is our very proud boast that five or six of the youngsters who came in here quite untrained and never having seen a stage before, are now making a big name for themselves in the West End of London and the Provinces. Of this fact, we are more proud than words can express. Sometimes one gets a bit of a shock when suddenly a youngster, whom you have groomed by dint of hard work and a lot of patience, walks into one's office and says, "V.D. I shall be leaving you shortly as such-and-such a management have offered me a very good chance in a big West End show."

I never say 'No,' when I consider that an offer is going to be to the advantage of any particular youngster, but you can imagine what a wrench it is at a time when they are just over the threshold and on the bottom rung of the ladder of fame I have to lose them, but as one goes so there is always another in this Theatre ready to take her place.

Knowing as I do that this Souvenir, like the previous ones, will be dispatched, as soon as ready, to regular patrons of ours now stationed in the four corners of the earth, I will take this opportunity on behalf of Mrs. Henderson, and myself, to thank all you fellows from the bottom of my heart for the magnificent staunchness you have shown, some of you having been absent for years from here, in wishing to follow the 'ups and downs' of your favourite house of entertainment, and the company joins with me in wishing you a speedy and safe return, when we can welcome you all into the portals of this record-breaking establishment.

Yours Sincerely,

Vivian Van Damm
Producer and General Manager.
