Albert
Chevalier was an actor and music hall entertainer who became known
as the ‘Coster’s Laureate’ because of his songs in Cockney dialect
on London common life.
Albert’s first appearance in the music
hall was at the London Pavilion,
his opening song being ‘The Coster’s Serenade’. He was dressed in
a chequered jacket, peaked cap, neckcloth and bell bottomed trousers,
all trimmed with the velvet and pearl buttons of the Coster comedian.
To many of his friends and fellow actors he was considered to be committing
‘social suicide’ by moving into the music halls, but Albert was to
prove them all wrong.

...After working in England, he was enticed by an American producer
to the U.S.A. at 3 times his British salary. He often traveled to
Paris to appear at the Alhambra, the Olympia and the Folies Bergere.
One high honor was, being made, at 42, an officer of the French Academy,
the first music hall performer to gain this honor. The good folk of
Kent flocked to London to laugh at him. For 17 years he was the toast
of the old Tivoli Theatre in the Strand,
and in a memorable show in 1907 he was one of the 5 Harrys – Harry
Lauder, Harry Tate, Harry Fragson
and Harry Randell. The show was billed as "sensational success of
the FIVE Harry’s", and ran for ten Fantastic weeks.

VESTA
TILLEY — known as The London Idol, made her first appearance in 1868
and became very popular throughout the country. She was famous for
her impersonations of men about town and After the Ball was one of
her many popular songs. She died at the age of 88.
GERTIE GITANA — made her name during the early 1900s, and the song
Nellie Dean was one of her greatest successes. She died in 1957 aged
68.
